Znakomity, ultranowoczesny tryptyk zafundował entuzjastom improwizowanych brzmień saksofonista i kompozytor Marek Pospieszalski. Po albumie „Dürer’s Mother” i „Polish Composers of 20th Century” jest kolejna odsłona: dedykowany polskim kompozytorkom album „No Other End Of The World Will There Be”. To swoisty, jazzowy Poczet Kompozytorów Polskich. Marek Pospieszalski w tegorocznej ankiecie krytyków magazynu Jazz Forum został uhonorowany tytułem Muzyka Roku, a jego album „Polish Composers of 20th Century” wybrano Albumem Roku. Podobne nagrody spłynęły do artysty w ramach prestiżowego Grand Prix Melomani ( Artysta Roku, Album Roku) .
By Bruce Lee Gallanter, DMG BREW features Miya Masaoka on koto, electronics & monochord, Reggie Workman on contrabass, percussion, musical saw & didgeridoo and Gerry Hemingway on drums, vibes, voice & electronics. I recall a gig by the Reggie Workman Ensemble at the Old Knitting Factory in the early 1990’s and the personnel included Marilyn Crispell, Don Byron, Gerry Hemingway & others. The group played two long sets that night and I remember being blown away by it. Both discs from this two CD set were recorded around 20 years apart. Disc One was recorded at two places: 2 tracks from Tedesco Studio (in NJ) in the winter of 1998 and the rest of the tracks from the Old Knitting Factory in November of 1999. This is an extraordinary trio of gifted improvisers who like to add electronics and/or percussion..
By Karl Ackermann The quintet project Tilting Curvaceous is saxophonist/composer Patrick Brennan‘s sixth leader/co-leader date since the late 1990s. His duo recording Terraphonia (Creative Sources Recordings, 2019) with guitarist Abdul Moimême demonstrated a strong affinity for free improvisation within unconventional settings and uncommon concepts. Brennan is joined by trumpeter and flugelhorn player Brian Groder. The native New Yorker has been a long-time fixture on the NYC jazz scene and has devoted a significant part of his career to the frequent use of free-form styles. His work includes original film soundtracks and multi-media presentations. The remainder of the group has shared stages and studios with a who’s-who of jazz. Detroit-born pianist Rod Williams has performed and recorded with David Murray, James Carter, Lester Bowie, Dewey Redman, Steve Coleman, Geri Allen, Henry Threadgill, Julius Hemphill, Oliver Lake, and many other top tier..
By Tor Hammerø Spennende kromosomer Mário Costa i front for sin utmerkde internasjonale kvartett. Her har Mário Costa (37) satt sammen sitt drømmelag for anledninga.
By Michael Pronko Bringing together the Norwegian jazz quartet, or two of them, with Dojo, the Japanese improvisational koto and drum duo, was an inspired bit of experimental madness. One that works marvelously. Recorded live at the classic hole-in-the-wall underground club Aketa No Mise on a tour during the middle of the pandemic, the four musicians not only unite their wild imaginations, unique techniques, and musical breadth, they put out a ton of energy. Kicking off with “Dust Devils,” the four musicians use electronics p.r.n. with strings or percussion or effects along for the ride, to create a tune like a sonic whirlwind spinning across a desert plain. You can hear it, but the sound has no single shape. The split-second shifting of textures, of momentary whims, is what makes the song so fascinating. “Country of Lost Borders” pits neo-western..
By Eyal Hareuveni This musical summit of the Norwegian Chrome Hill Duo – guitarist Asbjørn Lerheim and double bassist Roger Arntzen (without Chrome Hill’s sax player Atle Nymo and drummer Torstein Lofthus) and the Japanese Dōjō Duo – innovative koto player Michiyo Yagi and drummer Tamaya Honda, was a dream come true. Lerheim and Arntzen entertained the idea of incorporating Yagi’s unique sound into Chrome Hill’s music after seeing her performing with the German drummer and Krautrock icon Mani Neumeier in 2014. They managed to do so in the 2019 tour of Chrome Hill in Japan, when Yagi and drummer Noritaka Tanaka were invited to join the band at Koen-Dori Classics in Shibuya, Tokyo. Live At Aketa No Mise was recorded a year later in January 2020, with the so-called chamber version of Chrome hill – Lerheim and Arntzen, and..
By Stephen Deliriously thrilling stuff here from a Desterro club Lisbon recording dating to last June. We are immediately transported into the zone of The Thing however long away from even a sniff of that tasty sonic smörgåsbord. Not for the more timid type of nag happy to graze exclusively on dinner jazz this wild Portuguese trio is led by bass guitarist Felipe Zenicola and features the blistering very Albert Ayler-esque saxist Yedo Gibson and the Paal Nilssen-Love of the kit drummer João Valinho who like a giant whale surfacing and snorting dives down to incredible rumbling depths as he thrashes around the ocean of sound that he and the other intrepid maties develop. A fiery brew. Yes it’s all been done before but by no means enough. Surely we are all grown-up enough to embrace all this fabulous ingeniously..
By Stef Gijssels This new album by the Luis Vicente 4Tet is a fascinating return to the line-up and musical approach of the free jazz from the 60s and 70s. The album consists of two long tracks, one of 25 minutes, the other 42, that mainly consist of improvised explorations but anchored around agreed themes that are barely present, yet give the music a coordinated and strongly rooted feeling. Think of the music of Ornette Coleman of the mid-60s or even Don Cherry’s music with “Symphony For Improvisors”, of which one of the themes on this album is remeniscent of Cherry’s “Mopti” (just like a theme on the first track created vague memories of Michael Blake’s “Mekong”, please check it out if you don’t know this). These are just references to illustrate the quality and the beauty of the themes...
By Ken Waxman Although big bands often toured with a full stage show including characteristic terpsichorean, improvised tap dancing has been a negligible part of Jazz and improvised music performances for at least 75 years. Until Norway’s One Step came along that is. Fits formed by tap dancer Janne Eraker and bassist Roger Arntzen, when later joined by fiddler and vocalist Vegar Vårdal they can now offer a full – albeit acoustic – multi-media experience. That experience is succinctly captured on this CD. Introduced with some bird-like whistling, double bass strokes and harsh wooden heel stomps and completed by staccato heel-and-toe clacks as regularized as drum beats, “Heija” and “Yarny”, the lengthy middle tracks allow the trio members to stretch out their art to its best advantage. Vårdal’s onomatopoeic vocals ranging from guttural growls, constant yelps, exasperated sighs mumbles and..
Refreshing first of all to hear such a loose stripped back sound again. Avant delights are always welcome. Readers will be familiar most here with the drummer in the long running Day & Taxi, Gerry Hemingway, the 67-year-old New Haven born player known for his work with above all Anthony Braxton and Marilyn Crispell. Swiss saxist Christoph Gallio and double bassist Silvan Jeger, also from the land of the Toblerone, are less familiar. The method is simple enough, provide acres of space given there isn’t a piano or guitar to fatten the harmonic bird in the pot Gallio choosing the unusual C-melody saxophone at times among his arsenal of horns that results in a piquant tonal growl and earthy rumble at times. Tunes are Gallio’s who is viscerally scalding and compelling on the quirkily entitled ‘Marina and the Lucky Pop..
By Jan Granlie, Salt Peanuts The alto- and tenor saxophonist and bass clarinettist Avram Fefer is in good company on this record, where he meet the fantastic guitar player Marc Ribot, the perfect bass player Eric Revis and the great drummer Chad Taylor. Fefer composed all the pieces, eight of them are new ones. The quartet opens with the soulful and sensual groove of Showtime that cements Fefer and Ribot’s organic ability to breathe melodies as one and their almost telepathic interplay. This gift is even more clear when the quartet juggles with polyrhythmic patterns with its middle-Eastern vibes on pieces like Bedouin Dream and Brother Ibrahim, the latter piece was originally recorded on Fefer’s Shades of the Muse (CIMP, 2004) in the midst of the Iraq war, as a protest piece against the horrors of that futile war. Throughout..
We don’t usually comment on cover art but make an exception here as the design and paintings, glance above, are beautiful. The music as you might guess given the visual clues is highly modernistic and avant-garde and just as appealing. We have been listening to music by veteran German reedist Frank Gratkowski for years and even more regularly by the equally prolific pianist Simon Nabatov. Recording as so often at the Loft venue in Cologne there is an intricacy in what Nabatov in a duo setting achieves. And while some passages can be wild and hugely exuberant there is a lot of thought in the compositional design of the album and you get a grandeur that you don’t always obtain from free-jazz. When Gratkowski switches especially to flute or clarinet it’s as if new possibilities arise and you get a..
The squalling Albert Ayler-like sound and fury of saxophonist John Dikeman operates like a molotov cocktail. Equally explosive is his front line partner trumpeter Luís Vicente and the two are very ably supported by the Irreversible Entanglements avant bassist Luke Stewart and drummer Onno Goevart recording in a Caldas da Rainha church in Portugal two summers ago. When Stewart solos Olie Brice fans will feel right at home. Think the mood of Atlantic period Ornette Coleman for its elemental rawness and heartfelt themes peppered by an insistent ripple of emotion and strong pulsar direction. A period listen in a way without trying to be nevertheless there’s a lot to like here and Vicente whose sound makes me think of the late Dennis González is a compelling presence. By Massimo Ricci When an engine is in good operating order, it can be disassembled for a very long time before being put back together and starting to roar. So it makes sense that throughout a 13-year span, Gorilla Mask only released a handful of records – four, to be exact. In actuality, the most important thing is to be informed of what to anticipate when confronted with them. By demonstrating the abilities of Peter Van Huffel, Roland Fidezius and Rudi Fischerlehner at the perfect fusion of experimental intent, elastic groove and, every so often, healthy badassery, Mind Raid unquestionably lives up to expectations. Outstanding musicians are rarely ready to perform without drawing attention to their talent. On the contrary, the trio’s vision of clever democracy actually remains as a significant sensation at the end of this encounter, after seven..
