Cryptocurrency is a digital or virtual asset that uses cryptography for security. Cryptocurrencies are decentralized, meaning they are not subject to government or financial institution control. The most well-known cryptocurrency is Bitcoin, which was created by Satoshi Nakamoto in 2009. Since then, various other cryptocurrencies have surfaced and become popular in their own right. Dogecoin, for example, was created as a joke currency but has since exploded in popularity due to support from celebrities like Elon Musk.
