Forget the now-waning MCU era. Comic book adaptations really became the rage after Tim Burton’s Batman grossed a mighty $450 million back in 1989. One of the films released in the wake of that DC Comics behemoth was The Phantom – a rollicking adventure starring Billy Zane, directed by Simon Wincer. The Phantom was a comic strip created by Lee Falk in 1936, and it follows the adventures of …er… The Phantom, who is also known as The Ghost Who Walks, a jungle-dwelling hero who inherited the legendary name from his father. The cast of the 1996 release was filled out with the late, great Treat Williams, Kristy Swanson, a pre-Michael Douglas/Oscar-winning Catherine Zeta-Jones and Patrick McGoohan. Like The Shadow and The Rocketeer before it, the period-set adventure was a box office bomb when it opened, grossing a measly $17.3 million at the U.S. box office off a $45 million budget. In 2008 there were rumours of a reboot of The Phantom starring Sam Worthington, but they fizzled out and came to nothing.
