CLEARWATER, FL (April 19, 2024)– Two endangered green sea turtles, Challah and Gypsum, were successfully released back into the Gulf of Mexico yesterday (April 18) after undergoing extensive rehabilitation at Clearwater Marine Aquarium.
Amethyst is a juvenile, Kemp's ridley from Cedar Key who was accidentally caught by a fisherman and ingested two fish hooks. The hooks were successfully removed without the need for surgery by our staff veterinarian! We are hopeful for a quick recovery for Amethyst.
Clearwater Marine Aquarium is pleased to announce the arrival of Opie, a young male North American river otter, to its Otter Oasis. Opie joins the CMA family, where he will reside alongside Walle, 13, and Boomer, 6 - two otters who have been captivating visitors since their arrival in 2012 and 2018, respectively. After several weeks of acclimation behind the scenes, Opie has now been introduced to Walle and Boomer where guests will be able to see him adjust to his new habitat.
It’s almost May and that means it’s sea turtle nesting season, announces sea turtle biologists at Clearwater Marine Aquarium. The season officially begins April 15 and runs through Oct. 31 according to Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission(FWC), which is a critical time for sea turtles who continue their legacy and return to the original beach where they were born, to lay their eggs.

Sapphire is a juvenile green sea turtle who found washed ashore on March 24 in St. John's County. Due to space limitations, Sapphire was transferred to CMA from Volusia County Marine Science Center to continue out the remainder of their rehabilitation.

CLEARWATER, FL (March 28, 2024)– Pearl, an adult, female diamondback terrapin, was found floating June 16 near a seawall in Palm Harbor. Her carapace - or shell - had injuries, and Pearl was lethargic, underweight, and had minimal use of her rear legs at intake examination.
A 10.5 foot manatee named Reckless and her very young calf were rescued from the northern Indian River Mosquito Lagoon near Edgewater by Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission and Volusia County Marine Mammal Stranding Team on May 21, 2022. Reckless needed rescue assistance due to her injuries received when she was struck by a boat. Both animals were transported to SeaWorld Orlando for critical rehabilitation care. Reckless received nine surgeries to overcome her extensive injuries, an amazing effort by the Veterinarians and animal husbandry staff. Reckless and her female calf, Churro, were released together on January 18, 2024, at the Port Everglades discharge canal in Fort. Lauderdale, Florida.
Neptunite is a juvenile green sea turtle who was found washed ashore in Volusia county on March 11. Neptunite was transferred to CMA on March 12 from Volusia County Marine Science Center as they do not treat turtles with the fibropapilloma virus and other facilities had space limitations. Neptunite was lethargic and had a moderate load of epibiota present on their carapace on intake examiniation. Neptunite's initial treatment plan consists of vitamins and fluids.
Ruffles is a juvenile green sea turtle who was found floating near Cocoa Beach in Brevard county on March 9. Due to space limitations, Ruffles was transferred to CMA on March 10 to continue out the remainder of their rehabilitation. Ruffles has a relatively good body condition and a moderate load of fibropapilloma tumors present. Ruffles initial treatment plan consists of vitamins and fluids.

Jade is a juvenile green sea turtle who was found stranded on Sand Key on Feb.13. Jade was lethargic but has relatively good body condition at intake examination. Jade experienced acute hypothermia due to our local cold weather. Jade has no other external abnormalities. Jade's initial treatment plan consists of vitamins and fluids.

Gypsum is a subadult green sea turtle who was found lethargic near south Anclote in Pinellas county on February 7. Gypsum has a large amount of epibiota (algae and barnacles) on their carapace (shell) and head, which means they have been debilitated for quite some time. Gypsum is also missing their left front flipper, but it is completely healed and unrelated to their cause for stranding.
This week, Clearwater Marine Aquarium released 11 cold-stunned Kemp’s ridley sea turtles back into the Atlantic Ocean near the Cape Canaveral area, after they were rehabilitated for two months at the Clearwater Marine Aquarium.
Citrine is a juvenile green sea turtle who was found washed ashore in Flagler county on Jan. 24. Citrine was transferred to CMA from Whitney Lab on Jan. 25 due to space limitations they were experiencing with recent strandings. Citrine has a heavy load of barnacles on their carapace, thin body condition, and a moderate load of fibropapilloma tumors.
Beryl is a juvenile green sea turtle who was found washed ashore in Flagler county on Jan. 24. Beryl was transferred to CMA from Whitney Lab on Jan. 25 due to space limitations they were experiencing with recent strandings. Beryl has a relatively good body condition and minor fibropapilloma tumors present.

Pumpernickel is a subadult green sea turtle who was found floating near Indian Rocks on Jan. 17. It was reported that they had trouble staying submerged. Pumpernickel does have a previous injury to their caudal carapace (shell) that is completely healed. They had a large amount of epibiota (algae and barnacles) just on this portion of their carapace which tells us they have been buoyant for some time. Over the next few weeks, we will be performing diagnostics to better assess the cause of their buoyancy.
Aquamarine is a juvenile, green sea turtle who was found floating near Honeymoon Island on Jan. 21. Aquamarine experienced acute hypothermia due to our local cold weather, and their body temperature was back to normal values the next day! We are hopeful for a quick recovery!
