Red lipsticks mean so many things to me....confidence, power, symbols of resistance (the suffragettes), putting my best foot forward, glamour and yet they also require constant upkeep, can end up the chin or even nose and often rub off leaving behind a line of red around the lips. This week I discovered a wonderful new red whilst on a trip to Boots (I'll tell you all about it during the episode) and it inspired me to go through my favourite reds of the moment and all time. Here are the brands that I mention during the episode: @lisaeldridgemakeup @emolynecosmetics @nyxcosmetics_uk @violette_fr @trinnylondon @maccosmeticsuki @maybelline @avon_uk I'll also tell you about a brand new release from Dr Sam Bunting and why if it does what it says it will, it will be a bit of a gamechanger.
In this week's episode of Outspoken Mental Health I talk about my experience of panic attacks and feelings of doom and dread. I'll chat about what's happening when we get a panic attack and the long list of horrible (but harmless) things they can make us feel. I'll also go into why it's so important to have an inner voice that reminds us that we are safe and helps us to tolerate the discomfort of this moment so that we can teach are brain that all is good and that we don't need the unnecessary surge of adrenaline that's causing all the problems in the first place. I'll also go into navigating constant feelings of dread and terror which can actually feel worse than the panic itself. Please remember that I am not an expert and I am chatting about my own experience and sharing what i have learnt. If you need help then don't be ashamed to ask for it. See your GP or contact a mental health charity like https://www.mind.org.uk/information-support/?gad_source=1&gclid=Cj0KCQiAhbi8BhDIARIsAJLOluebQ02TU0FNGAjYd-ch9iJGQYwQTbyjjeK22h1am3_HSyBsWI5TRYQaAlfxEALw_wcB I have created a https://www.facebook.com/groups/1626153351319481to go with this series. In this week's episode I welcome the utterly fascinating dermatologist, cosmetic safety expert and skincare brand founder Dr Tiina Meder. Tiina originally started her brand Meder with the aim of making skincare that would be safe but truly effective for everyone, including pregnant women. To this day, everything in the Meder line up is pregnancy safe, but it is about so much more than that. Meder is all about getting incredible results but with skin loving ingredients such as peptides and pro-biotics (Tiina is at the forefront of research into the microbiome). During the episode we talk about the brands that Tiina likes, we have an eye-opening chat about Tiina's views on retinoids and vitamin c and we talk about the changes that she believes we'll be seeing in the skincare industry over the next few years. I definitely left our chat questioning a lot of what I have believed to be true about skincare. (This has excited me rather than worried me....I'm looking forward to looking deeper into the world of pro/pre and all the other biotics that she mentions). I love Tiina and while I know that some of her views are controversial, I think that she has robust evidence for many of her opinions. I can't wait to hear what you think xx
We're at the end of the week and these are some of the (eclectic) things that have been on my mind over the past 7 days. I'll be talking about Lily Allen checking into rehab, my thoughts about the film Baby Girl, why at 44 I'm finally ready to embrace the gym and why sometimes nothing beats going real life shopping! DM me any time@outspokenbeautynicola if you have any comments on today's episode.
If you're after honest, no holds barred reviews then you've come to the right place. This week I'm sharing my thoughts on: Gatineau Age Benefit Cleansing Elixir Indu (with special mention of their SPF) K18 AirWash The Inkey List Ectoin Hydro-Barrier Serum Meder by Dr Tiina Meder A bright red scarf from Oliver Bonas! Let me know what's been impressing you recently xx
Trigger Warning: I talk about sexual abuse during this episode During my final session with my brilliant psychologist, she told me that I should share my anxiety and mental health story with as many people as possible. Hearing this from a woman who is truly at the top of her game and who has helped me immeasurably took away all the doubts that I've been having (who am I to talk about anxiety when I'm not a trained professional?) and confirmed to me that I have a responsibility to share my story and everythings I've learnt from it (my lifelong anxiety condition, breakdown and road to recovery) with as many people as possible because when I was at my worst I needed to hear the things that I'll be talking about. They would have helped me so much. So this is Outspoken Anxiety. Each Monday I'll talk about my anxiety journey and what I've learnt along the way. I'll chat about the professionals who have helped me, the lifestyle changes I've had to make, medication, how to live with an anxiety condition and I'll also try and help you navigate the at times complicated world of seeking help for mental health. I realise this won't be for everyone but if I can help just one person that's enough! In episode 1 I give a bit of background about my mental health and then chat about the warning signs that you shouldn't ignore and how to calm your nervous system when things start to bubble up. Please DM me @outspokenbeautynicola if you have any questions. Also here is the link to the private Facebook Group that goes with the podcast: https://PrivateFacebookPage Please only join if you suffer with anxiety or know someone who does and want to help them.

I wanted to start the week by sharing how I feel about New Year pressures and why you need to close your ears and eyes to them. Begone pressure to lose all the weight and ads with magical solutions to all our supposed New Year problems. I also talk about why I like to get excited about work at this time of year but how you can't change everything overnight. Suzy Nightingale and I are NOT fans of New Year's Eve and we most definitely don't believe in extreme New Year's resolutions. In this episode we go on a wonderful rant about New Year's Eves of the past, crazy resolutions we made when we were younger and why we both shake at the thought of the dreaded midnight kiss. We hope you enjoy this slightly irreverent and grumpy take on our most dreaded night of the year!
Prepare to be afraid...very afraid. This episode is a beauty themed Christmas Ghost Story that takes place in the basement of Liberty London. The new beauty buyer will never feel the same again after two ghostly icons take charge and change her fate forever!

I hope this mini guide makes you giggle. Thanks for all your support this year. You're the most phenomenal community and I've got lots of great stuff in store for you in 2025. Merry Christmas Outspoken Beauties xx

Expect a mixture of old favourites and some newness that has really taken my breath away!
This Episode is in Parternship With Lyma In this episode I get to know Lucy Goff, the founder of cutting edge beauty/wellbeing brand Lyma. Lyma was born when Lucy was incredibly ill with sepsis following the birth of her daughter. She was struggling to function properly when she came across Professor Paul Clayton, a world-renowned expert on preventative degenerative disease and evidence-based nutrition. He prescribed a series of supplements that had "peer-reviewed, patented ingredients, dosed at active levels, had a rigorous sourcing procedure, and were formulated so that the body could actually absorb them." Lucy saw her health improve and the rest is history. Lucy and Paul worked together to come up with Lyma supplements that did all of the above. They were the first luxury supplement brand with a huge amount of data and proof to back them up. Fastforward to now and Lyma have broken boundaries again with a laser device that is as powerful as the ones you find in clinic but that is safe to use at home and even fits in your handbag! During the episode we chat about the making of Lyma, the supplement world being a bit like the Wild West in terms of knowing what actually works and we also talk about the incredible science behind the supplements and the Lyma Laser. (The laser can do truly incredible things for the skin). This is a fascinating brand that is breaking boundaries and going to the nth degree to back up everything that it does with good, solid proof.
So many questions this week and such a variety. I'll be talking about excessively sweaty feet and hands, my thoughts about Sisley and whether it's worth the money, under eye concealers that don't crease, which 5 perfumes I'd GET RID of from my collection, what I've asked for this Christmas and lots more. If you have any questions for next week's episode DM me @outspokenbeautynicola.

If you only listen to one thing this week make it this. Tracey Woodward is one of the most influential women in the beauty industry, she's also one of the kindest. Her career has seen her hold roles at beauty brands including Aveda, Urban Retreat Spa at Harrods and Harvey Nichols. She's worked as an advisor for Marks & Spencer where she helped re-design and develop the beauty department and was CEO at Aromatherapy Associates (and that's just for starters). But it's not only Tracey's career that is so startling, it's her strength, resilience and the way that she rose like a phoenix from a childhood that could have taken her on a very different path. During this episode, Tracey opens up and talks from the heart about her incredibly difficult childhood, the women who held her hand and helped her to become the person he is today, navigating a very scary cancer diagnosis and how she keeps herself mentally and physically as health and balanced as possible. This is an interview that will stay with you and if you're anything like me, inspire you in a multitude of ways.

I had to re-run this episode with modern day feminist, illustrator and author Florence Given which was recorded when she had just published her first book "Women Don't Owe You Pretty". Fast forward a couple of years and she's now got anotehr Sunday Times Bestseller out. This time it's called Women Living Deliciously and is all about unpacking the barriers we face so that we can access the joy we deserve. During this episode Florence and I take "Women Don't Owe You Pretty" as a starting point for a discussion about the role that beauty plays in a woman's life. Do we wear makeup because it is an expectation that has been set by the patriachy? What exactly is beauty? How much power do we actually have to look how we truly want to? Florence challenges social expectations of beauty and definitely made me revaluate a few things. This is a fascinating episode with a woman who isn't afraid to be truly outspoken.
In this episode I chat to the thoroughly lovely model, mother and knitter extraordinaire, Laura Coleman. I met Laura when we were chatting on a panel about beauty standards and found that we shared many of the same beliefs about the pressure that is put on women to look a certain way. Laura talked about how she has stopped worrying about how she looks and started accepting what she sees in the mirror. During the podcast Laura and I talk about how she has learnt to go with the flow and not overthink things. This has led to her life being far less stressful. She chats about shunning the constant life advice that she is fed on social media in favour of doing the things that make sense to her (ie Don't force yourself to do a workout if your body is telling you it needs a nice lie down on the sofa with a cuppa). Laura also tells me about the huge part that knitting plays in her life, the beauty products that make her happiest, coming to terms with stretch marks and lets me into the secret of her INCREDIBLE necklaces. I love Laura. She is a warm, kind, down to earth soul who makes you feel like we sometimes need to take life a little less seriously and calm the F down (which is definitely what I need!) Enjoy this Outspoken Beauties xx
