Experimenting with different painting techniques has always been very important for me. The “Zafer” style that we see today is the result of years of more or less conclusive tests which slowly forged my knowledge of painting. I don't think the Zafers would have appeared in my life if I hadn't practiced the diverse styles that have made my artistic adventure rich. I learned lessons from practicing these different techniques that are extremely useful to me in my artistic life today.Among these tec
In my opinion, it is important to live with the times and learn to evolve in a world of rapid technological change. Personally, I have always been passionate about IT, digital technology and the possibilities that our time offers me to communicate about my art. Before the advent of social networks, it was difficult for me to promote my painting in Mauritius and it was practically impossible to make myself known abroad without a substantial budget.I had the chance to study graphic arts including
The Zafer style that I have been practicing for many years was not born overnight. I have often been asked where the inspiration behind the style comes from. I've thought about this a lot and could give you a few. First of all, I was greatly influenced by the paintings of Vincent Van Gogh. I have always been impressed by his boldness in his brushstrokes and his choice of colours. Observing the shapes they traced on his canvas, I wondered what a painting would look like where the use of these sha
Can we determine “success” as an artist? Is it through the sales of the paintings and their price? Is it by the likes and comments on social networks and the number of followers? Is it through the recognition of the artist throughout the world? How do you know if you have “succeeded” as an artist? Is success determined by those around us, the media, social networks, foreign curators who are interested in our art or by personal satisfaction in achieving the goal we had dreamed of? I would say it’
This start to the week has been particularly special and full of emotions. I had the pleasure of welcoming a Japanese journalist, Taisuke Kikuchi, and a photographer, Tomoaki Nakano to my workshop. Both work for Kyodo News (Japan) and are based in Kenya. After discovering, thanks to their Mauritian friends Brian and Hannah, my paintings on the internet, they came to interview me about my artistic journey, about the Zafer style and the representation of the dodo in my paintings. Taisuke wanted to
A few years ago, someone approached me to ask me to give him painting lessons. This was in May and he had the desire or the financial need to hold a painting exhibition at the end of that same year. He asked me if six months would be enough to make him an artist capable of producing an exhibition. It would have been entirely possible for him to produce and exhibit paintings after six months of learning and hard work, but he would have lacked one essential thing, which is maturity. As with good a
What I find difficult with my recurring depression is the effort I have to make to carry out tasks that, at first glance, seem simple to other people. Starting a painting is difficult for me. There is a little voice whispering to me that I will feel so much better in my bed and that it would be better to wait another day to start it. With depression, everything is a struggle. From getting up to going to bed, you have to constantly fight with yourself to avoid falling into immobility. Over time,
This question has often been asked of me. When I started, I painted out of desire. I wanted to produce paintings as beautiful as those hung in my parents' living room. I observed with envy the paintings of Mauritian painters already established on the artistic scene. At the time, I dreamed of one day when my parents would agree to hang one of my paintings on the walls of the house. I then began to paint regularly, observing the paintings of other painters such as Charoux or Ménardeau. Over time,
Quelle aventure passionnante ! From the top of his mountain, P
From the top of his mountain, Pieter Both must have contemplated more than one dodo. Under a "rose gâteau coco" sky (a pink colour particular to the coconut sweets of my childhood), the bird waddles peacefully. While advancing just as peacefully in the creation of the world of the Zafers, I began to introduce imaginary and particularly colourful trees into my paintings. In the long run, I would like to no longer have any real elements in my paintings and I am working on deprogramming myself from
Sometimes I dream that I am flying like a white tropicbird and, from the sky, I admire our beautiful island; its sparkling lagoons and mesmerising coastlines. But when I awake, the light bird gave way to a hippopotamus tragically anchored to the ground. Fortunately, all is not lost, I have images in my head with which I make paintings. This Zafer painting from the sky is 30.5 cm x 30.5 cm and is painted on canvas.
Sometimes I dream that I am flying like a white tropicbird and, from the sky, I admire our bea
What is fascinating with painting is that you never stop discovering, learning and changing direction, because, in my opinion, a style of painting is called upon to constantly evolve. When in 2003 I placed my first triangles, circles and spirals on a painting, I did not know that this style was going to offer me so many moments of happiness. A Zafer painting is not painted, it is slowly sculpted layer after layer with patience and passion. The paint is sometimes added, sometimes removed, as I co
What could be more endearing, for a Mauritian, than the dodo? This bird, which disappeared in the 17th century, has become over time the icon of the disappearance of species. It was only natural for me to want to include this ancestor of the pigeon in my bestiary. In my journey towards the imaginary, I took care to add trees of my creation in the background. While waiting for scientists to revive the dodos, I had fun offering them a framework where they can evolve without risk. Quoi de plus atta
I often illustrate my utopias. It is for me a way to make them exist in a world filled with disillusions. This painting is a hint to Michelangelo's fresco titled " The Creation of Adam." Here, humanity seals a pact with the marine world; a promise of respect and protection. The future of our oceans depends on our future actions and it is high time to act responsibly. J’illustre souvent mes utopies.
This small painting depicts social networks. We don't look each other in the face and stick out our tongues. This ability we have to throw mud on others while remaining hidden behind our screens is the unhidden drama of social media. At the end, social networks make us frankly unsociable.
This painting represents the feeling I had at the start of 2020 when we were first confined due to Covid-19. This large character stuck in a canvas too small for him is the reflection of all those who have felt cramped in their house or in their mind.
This painting titled " The elephant upstairs " is an image that makes sense to me. The need to illustrate my feelings is becoming more important in my painting. Gradually, I move away from the simple reproduction of a landscape and I enter unknown territory. Last year, I took a painting course with Alix Le Juge and a workshop with Christyna Smith-Jauffret, both great Mauritian artists and they both helped me put my emotions in order so that I could better reproduce them on canvas. I thank Alix a
This painting from 2015, from a photo by my friend Christian Bossu-Picat, illustrates a return from school in Baie Malgache, Rodrigues. This image of these children in uniform returning home through mountain trails touched us. Christian and I have traveled the roads of Rodrigues in search of typical images of this beautiful island and we share the same love for these scenes of life. The blue sheet metal house, a vestige of another era, faces the incredible Rodriguan lagoon.
» In this painting, the Eiffel Tower takes off to reach the Trocadéro! This highly stylized painting of Paris is part of my attempts to free myself from the grip of perspective. I find it very difficult to get rid of it and yet I really like paintings without perspective. After more than twenty-five years of realistic painting, today I would like to put on paper or on canvas
This little painting of the Ile de la
Imagination is an extraordinary faculty. It allows to illustrate feelings that are sometimes complex. I decided to place on the canvas the scenes that sometimes come to me in dreams or in a flash. These seemingly meaningless images do, however, upon reflection, make sense to me. In society, for example, I often feel like this lama lost in the middle of the ocean. I still want to say that the lama in me has nothing to do with the Dalai Lama !
Every cat is entitled to its moment of tenderness. Cat select
This encounter at the top of a mountain overlooking Le Morne is the delightful figment of the imagination.. Art makes it possible to produce events that only took place in the mind of the creator. Once laid down on paper or canvas, this encounter begins to exist and the deer come to life under the benevolent gaze of the ravenala trees. Below, the bay of La Gaulette is dressed in turquoise clothes. Imagining this painting saved the painter from a painful escalation during which he would undoubted
I could not count the number of picnics I had in La Prairie, in the southwest of the island. First as a child with my parents, then adult with my own children. This place still devoid of tourist hotels is still one of the few places where you can see the sea from the coastal road. On Saturdays, the children play on the beach while the parents listen to the racing report on the radio or now on their mobile. On Sunday afternoons, this place welcomes sunsets lovers. In the distance, Le Morne Mounta
My life is punctuated by ups and downs. Suffering from recurrent depression and bipolarity, I constantly have mood swings that make my weeks unpredictable. My brain chemistry often plays tricks on me. This painting illustrates this state. When a part of me goes up the slope, another part goes down towards the darkness.
Taking the old road from the Pamplemousses roundabout to Belle-Vue, the one that passes in front of the Anjalay Stadium, you can discover some flamboyant trees that bloom in summer certainly under the admiring gaze of Pieter Both. Well, the flamboyants might not be so triangular in real life, but they are through my Zafer gaze.
My wife Carol and I spent an afternoon with my goddaughter Romy Lagesse, the curator of my exhibition. A curator conceptualises painting exhibitions and gives unity to the whole event. Romy is doing her master's degree at the "Royal College of Art" in London and she gave me extremely wise advice and drew the direction that the exhibition should take. This is the first time I have worked with a curator and it has been an enriching experience. Like an orchestra conductor, she directed the installa
In the midst of the pandemic, the world had become divided between mask wearers and anti-masks. A prelude before the vaccinated and antivax. Those who did not wear the mask were looked at askance and pointed at.
