Watched Jun 1, 2023 Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is the animated sequel to "Into the Spider-verse" In this film Miles Morales is trying to juggle High School as well as fight crime as Spider-Man. Watched May 29, 2023 "Either MANDY in the old West, or Nicholas Cage's "UNFORGIVEN" The Old Way stars Nicholas Cage as Colton Briggs, a gunfighter who kills a man in front of his young son. Years later Colton has given up his wild ways and now has a wife and child; however, the young boy from his past is now all grown up and is seeking revenge. Watched May 27, 2023 Shazam! Fury of the Gods is the sequel to the 2019 surprise hit film. In this film Shazam and his crew have unknowingly released a group of 3 sisters who are Ancient Gods who come to earth, and have a mission to gain more power, or something of that aspect. Watched Jun 3, 2023 You’ve seen this all before…several times…but it’s well-done! Love Sophie Thatcher in Yellowjackets, she’s perfect here in what is essentially the Heather Langenkamp role. Pity about the CGI monster, but you can’t win ‘em all! #theboogeymanmovie #horror #stephenking #moviereview #2023film #Sactownmoviebuffs #Sactownmoviebuffsfilmfest #filmcritic
Watched May 26, 2023 Is there any actor alive with better comic timing than Julia Louis-Dreyfus? I can’t think of one. This is yet another low-key flawless performance from her in yet another funny/heartfelt/incisive/truthful Nicole Holofcener film. A reminder that I really need to finally catch up with Walking and Talking. True love and lying are not mutually exclusive concepts…and that’s the truth! #youhurtmyfeelingsmovie #A24 #moviereview #2023film #Sactownmoviebuffs #Sactownmoviebuffsfilmfes

Watched Jun 3, 2023 The Boogeyman is based on a story that we all heard about as kids. He's the monster that lives under your child's bed or in their closet and comes out to get them when they are sleeping at night. The film is essentially based on this story, with a little bit of "Lights Out" thrown in for good measure. This Boogeyman not only comes after the kids but also goes after the entire family, usually targeting families dealing with some type of grief or parents who are not paying atte
Watched Apr 7, 2023 A highly entertaining American success story. I don’t care a whole lot about sports, but I love a good movie about sports, and this is definitely one. Well, tangentially about sports anyway, more like the business side of sports which makes it more of a Jerry Maguire thing. Jerry Maguire is one of my all-time favorite films. Air is no Jerry Maguire, because even though it’s really fun and funny and heartfelt its ultimate message seems to be “GETTING RICH IS AWESOME!!” and Jer
Watched Apr 14, 2023 Unfortunately, this was Violent Night all over again for me. Meaning it’s a movie I was super stoked for, it’s got a great premise, it’s perfectly cast, everything on screen seems like I should be having a great time, but I’m just…not. Something was missing. 🤷♂️ Also like Violent Night, though, I definitely didn’t hate it, and it’s got some great scenes. Both are films I can see revisiting and possibly enjoying more, but pretty sure I’ll never love it. Cage is a great Drac
Watched May 5, 2023 Pretty wonderful! The animation is incredibly beautiful, full of soothing colors and imaginative landscapes. The story is simple but snappy and fun. Some really solid needle drops. I’m not much of a gamer, but I have lots of history with Mario (primarily the first three Mario games on the original Nintendo and Super Mario 64 for Nintendo 64) and seeing some of those OG Nintendo landscapes and challenges from a first person POV was way more thrilling than I expected. Good stuf
Watched May 13, 2023 I almost never watch stand-up, but when I do, I usually ask myself “why don’t I watch more stand-up?” This is great! #johnmulaneybabyjmovie #comedy #netflix #standupspecial #moviereview #2023film #Sactownmoviebuffs #Sactownmoviebuffsfilmfest #filmcritic
Watched Mar 31, 2023 I greatly enjoyed this! Much closer in spirit to Army of Darkness and The Princess Bride than it is to The Lord of the Rings, and that rambunctious, jovial good humor and heart has been missing from fantasy films lately. The entire cast works great together and the whole thing has a wonderful underdog quality. Loved it! #dungeonsanddragonshonoramongthieves #dungeonsanddragons #liveaction #moviereview #2023film #Sactownmoviebuffs #Sactownmoviebuffsfilmfest #filmcritic
Watched May 15, 2023 Fast X is the 10th installment of the Fast and Furious Franchise. In this film "Dom" played by Vin Diesel, has a new enemy who wants to ruin Dom and his family over an event that happened back in Fast Five. The new foe is played by Jason Momoa, and the film also co-stars Michelle Rodriguez, Tyrese Gibson, Ludacris, John Cena, Nathalie Emmanuel, Jordana Brewster, Sung Kang, Charlize Theron, and Jason Statham. I've always been a big fan of these films. They are typically unbel
Watched Apr 11, 2023 Renfield stars Nicholas Hoult, as Renfield an understudy for Count Dracula played by Nicolas Cage. After several decades of basically caring for Dracula, Renfield starts to wonder what life would be like if he didn't have Dracula around. He soon meets a police officer played Awkwafina, who is tracking down a family of mobsters, and also searching for missing bodies. The film also stars Ben Schwartz. I really enjoyed this film, I found it to be funny, action-packed and slight
Watched Apr 20, 2023 Awesome? I think? This is a lot to take in, that’s for sure. Rating slightly low to give room to move up next time. This is an onion and I’m going to look forward to peeling back a few layers every time I watch it. Wow. Definitely a very Charlie-Kaufman-esque experience, because much like the characters in Being John Malkovich, I feel like I just crawled into someone’s unconscious mind and went exploring. At first it was exhilarating but after wandering down some very dark a
Watched May 20, 2023 I love Jena Malone and Danny Huston, I love (good) religious horror, I have been a big fan of Christopher Smith in the past (especially Black Death), and that is a wicked-ass poster. This starts out pretty good and ends in a semi-intriguing fashion, and deserves points for at least trying a different angle than most other religious horror films, but for a 90-minute movie it is sinfully boring and weirdly cheesy most of the time. #consecrationmovie #horror #blessed #movierevi
Watched Apr 12, 2023 Luther: The Fallen Sun stars Idris Elba in the title role of Luther, a British Detective who is chasing a serial killer. The Killer has Luther arrested to keep him off his trail, but Luther finds a way to escape to track down the man responsible. Having never seen the show I was worried I wouldn't be able to follow along with what was happening, but it wasn't a problem at all. I actually enjoyed the film quite a bit, and Andy Serkis plays such a great, creepy villain. I woul
Watched Apr 28, 2023 Might very well be one of the best movies about being a kid I’ve seen. Next time I might give it 5, we’ll see. Honestly, I can’t think of a single thing to criticize, except for maybe the super-clichéd use of Norman Greenbaum’s “Spirit in the Sky.” Seriously, it’s a great song and all, but does Norman Greenbaum have some kind of deal that requires that song to be used in literally any movie that takes place in the ‘70s, if only to signal “this is the ‘70s!” The story is beau
Watched Apr 30, 2023 The first half of this is really good. In the second half it starts to feel a bit long and repetitive and I was starting to check out a little, but it got me back for the ending. Cool soundtrack, fascinating story (although I wonder if the true story involved that action-movie-style car chase?) and a great soundtrack. I like Taron Egerton a lot but after Rocketman I was expecting him to be better at air guitar. Definitely feels like a movie that was made for TV (aka streamin
Watched May 6, 2023 I was completely taken aback by how bleak this is at times! I mean, it is totally a Guardians of the Galaxy movie and all, but this thing is dark. And weird! And intense! And violent! James Gunn sure went out swinging on what is probably his swan song for Marvel. At no point does it feel like a “Marvel movie” (and I mean that as a compliment). Rather, it feels like the sequel to Akira that we never got, combined with the sequel to The Fifth Element that we never got, combined
Watched May 3, 2023 Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.3 is the final film of what I think are the most fun characters of the Marvel Universe. This film is what I would classify at the "Rocket Story" as most of the film is about Rocket's backstory and the gang all banding to togther to save his life after he is shot, and almost on the brink of death. The remaining crew must travel to foreign worlds in hopes of retrieving a device for Rocket's recovery, all while dealing with a new enemy who is also aft
Watched Apr 22, 2023 FUUUUUUUUUUUUCK YESSSSSSSSSSSSSS! 1. High rise horror needs to be a thing again! 2. As an uncle with lots of awesome nephews and a niece I care about very much, I love the “cool Aunt as hero” storyline here. Super likable characters and strong performances all around. Heretofore unfamiliar with Lily Sullivan, but she rules. 3. SO MUCH BLOOD! 4. Cursed vinyl always makes me chuckle, reminds me of The Gate, Trick or Treat, and The Lords of Salem! 5. The cheese grater! 6. Prett
Watched Apr 1, 2023 This was really cool, I dig it, I dug it. Would have dug it even more at around 120 minutes as opposed to a butt-numbing and indulgent 169 minutes. “Indulgent” kind of goes with the territory with this franchise though, which has gotten more and more absurd with each installment. I don’t mind the indulgence in the action scenes, which are incredible (again) even if there are just too damn many of them, and I like the pronounced John Woo influence. I could do with way less of
Watched Apr 20, 2023 As much flack as most Netflix Original movies tend to get, they really do fill a specific need. "I am in the mood to watch a movie, nothing in particular, don't want any heavy lifting right now, just something with an [enter specific genre] vibe." Bam. There you go. It's not going to be best of anything you've ever seen, but it just might quench your thirst for zoning out to something of a certain type. And hey, that's not nothing. Just like the first one, this achieves exac
Watched Apr 22, 2023 Murder Mystery 2 brings back Adam Sandler and Jennifer Aniston once again who are a married couple and were a Cop and Hairdresser in the first film. In this film they have both quit their jobs and are now acting as full time Detectives. They are invited to a wedding where people end up dead. They must now search for clues to find out who the murder or murders could be. The film co-stars Mark Strong, Mélanie Laurent, Jodie Turner-Smith, and John Kani. I found the film to be s

Watched May 12, 2023 A very powerful documentary that seems like it’s going to be rather bleak at first, but ends up being enlightening, entertaining, and even quite funny. Watched Mar 04, 2023 Tar stars Cate Blanchett as Lydia Tar, a professional Orchestra Conductor who is involved in several scandals including Sexual Abuse of Power, and some other issues that have threatened her position at her Academy. The film also co-stars Nina Hoss, Noémie Merlant, Sophie Kauer, Julian Glover and Mark Strong. I enjoyed this film and thought the acting was great. The film is a bit long, however. Blanchett delivers a powerful performance, but I just wished they could have trimm
Watched Feb 18, 2023 Brian and Charles is a British comedy about a man named Brian who is somewhat of a loner and a failed inventor who builds an A.I. Robot as a companion. The Robot named Charles, can talk, think, and learn but is also very humorous. Charles basically starts off an infant but clearly grows up and becomes somewhat of a rebellious teenager who wants to be able to go out on his own, but Brain fears what will happen to him if his neighbors or anyone finds out about his invention. I
Watched Feb 17, 2023 Man, that was some hot garbage. Why do I keep going to see these empty, pointless movies? I thought the latest Spider-man, Dr. Strange, and Black Panther movies were bad, but they seem like masterpieces compared to this ugly, stupid, confused, cacophonous disaster. I really like Jonathan Majors and all, but have yet to see what supposedly makes Kang such a great villain. He seems indistinguishable from any other Marvel villain so far, and Majors mostly does only the usual sc
Watched Feb 25, 2023 Happy to see that Elizabeth Banks brings more than a little Wet Hot American Summer to Cocaine Bear, not just its comic absurdity but also its 80s love, including the fact that it kicks off with Jefferson Airplane’s “Jane!” This is definitely a movie called Cocaine Bear. Exactly what you expect and even if it’s not quite as hilarious and insane as I wanted it to be, it’s most definitely funny and crazy and very gory. Surprisingly vicious and intense at times too! Fun cast of
Watched March 03, 2023 A long, heavy, somber drama periodically interrupted by boxing. The annoyingly rowdy Friday night crowd I saw it with seemed confused and impatient with the former. I definitely liked it, but I was also a bit impatient at times and the original Creed is still the only one in the series I truly love. Michael B. Jordan is a great actor and shows solid chops behind the camera as well here, in his directorial debut. Jonathan Majors is outstanding, as per usual. This is what a
Watched Feb 18, 2023 Cocaine Bear is a comedy film directed by Elizabeth Banks about a bear at a park that consumes a copious amount of cocaine and goes on a killing spree in search of more cocaine. The film stars Keri Russell, O'Shea Jackson Jr., Alden Ehrenreich, and Ray Liotta in what may be his final role. This is an overly simplistic film. The plot is basic but overall, I found this film to be fun. I honestly expected it to be a little more over-the-top however, but there are enough "WTF" m
Watched Mar 08, 2023 This is a fantastic War Film! All Quiet on the Western Front is a war film set in WWII and centers around a group of young German Solider who are enlisted in Germany Army and are stationed at the Western Front of France. This is a Best Picture Nominee at the 2023 Oscars. This a fantastic War Film! The film shows a bit of both side of the war, mostly centered around the Germany Army but it also gives time for the French Army as well. The action is great, and I enjoyed how hon
Watched Feb 28, 2023 "A Real Crowd-Pleaser!" Creed III once again stars Michael B. Jordan as Adonis Creed (the son of Apollo Creed from the Rocky Series). In this film, Adonis having won serval fights and defended his belt several times, has decided to retire and becomes a Boxing Coach/Promoter. He also wants to spend more time with his wife and daughter who was born deaf. While training one of his prized fighters he runs into an old friend and former Golden Gloves Champ named Damian Anderson (J
Watched Mar 17, 2023 Adam Driver vs. dinosaurs? In a movie that is actually based on an original idea? Not a sequel, prequel, remake, reboot, franchise extension, intellectual property, or a homework assignment for some comic book “cinematic universe?” And on top of all that, it’s only 93 minutes long? FUCK YES. I wish 65 embraced its inherent cheesiness a bit more and were a little more fun. This is, after all, a movie that feels like it could have come out in 1995 starring Christopher Lambert
Watched Feb 26, 2023 Gonna be honest, I was fully prepared to hate this. I even had a few different pithy, dismissive one-or-two-sentence reviews in my head before I even started it. I just had a feeling that it would be one of those heavily hyped experimental horror movies that I get super psyched about and then end up bored out of my mind at how pretentious it is. “Who needs this artsy-fartsy, navel-gazing claptrap when I could be watching Evil Dead 2 and having fun instead?” I was prepared to
Watched Mar 04, 2023 Sorry, but this was a real non-sTÁRter for me. It is of course really well-made and Cate Blanchett is predictably great, but it’s a cold, empty movie that is also blunt, ugly, and obvious. 🤷♂️ Did not enjoy. Glad you all love it, but I desperately need to watch something with a pulse now. #tarmovie #oscarnominee #moviereview #2022film #Sactownmoviebuffs #Sactownmoviebuffsfilmfest #filmcritic
Watched Mar 11, 2023 "It was a fun ride!" Scream VI is the continuation of the "Ghostface" franchise. This film takes place a few months after the previous film set in Woodsboro, but the four surviving members have all moved to New York to attend college and to stay together. However, another Ghostface Killer is in the city and is terrorizing the survivors, mostly targeting Samantha who is believed to be the real killer from the previous film. The film stars Melissa Barrera, Jenna Ortega, Jasmin
