For many Black women, survival mode becomes the default setting long before we notice. We’ve been trained to push through exhaustion, pain, and stress—showing up for work, family, and community as if our tanks aren’t bone dry. Somewhere along the way, “empty” became normalized.
We’re all familiar with the dashboard in our cars—little warning lights blink when something’s off. Just like a car, our mental health gives us signals when it needs attention. The tricky part? Many of us normalize or overlook those signals until we’re running on empty.
A health scare forced me to stop. I had no choice but to take time off — from work, from pressure, from being “on.” For the first time in what felt like forever, my only job was to rest. To heal. To be still.
