On “Bitin’ List,” Tyler Childers sounds like a rotten son of a bitch. In the best possible way. The standout track from the burgeoning Kentucky singer/songwriter’s immediately essential new album, Snipe Hunter, finds Childers writing from the perspective of a comically vindictive prick who wishes to be infected by rabies so he can cause maximum damage when biting his foe.
Elbow and Under the Radar go way back. It was 2001 when we first met the band at the Roosevelt Hotel in Hollywood. The British band were in LA to promote their debut album, Asleep in the Back, and play a set at the Knitting Factory opening for Goldfrapp (that band were also touring their debut album). I interviewed frontman Guy Garvey poolside, discussing the band’s long gestation period to finally releasing their debut over a decade after first forming as teenagers in 1990, taking the name Elbow in 1997. Garvey was open and instantly likable.
