A Brief History of Feminism Feminism is a range of social movements, political movements, and ideologies that aim to define, establish, and achieve the political, economic, personal, and social equality of the sexes. Feminism incorporates the position that societies prioritize the male point of view, and that women are treated unfairly within those societies. Efforts to change that include fighting for women’s rights and gender equality, raising awareness about sexism and gender discrimination, and advocating for women’s rights in the workplace, at home, in education, and in the public sphere. The history of feminism can be divided into three waves. The first wave of feminism, which occurred in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, focused on overturning legal inequalities, particularly the right to vote. The second wave, which began in the 1960s and lasted through the late 1980s, addressed issues such as workplace inequality, reproductive rights, and de facto (unofficial) inequalities. The third wave, which began in the early 1990s, continued to address the inequalities of the second wave, and also focused on broader issues such as intersectionality, the challenges facing women of color, and the sexualization of women in the media.
