Kurtuluş Savaşı, or the Turkish War of Independence, is a conflict that began in 1919 and lasted until 1923. The conflict saw the Ottoman Empire fight against the Allied forces of Greece, France, Britain, and Italy for the freedom of Turkey. The war was fought in the aftermath of World War I and eventually resulted in a victory for the Turkish forces. The war is seen as a major event in Turkish history and is celebrated today in many parts of the country. The war was motivated by a desire to preserve Turkish sovereignty after the fall of the Ottoman Empire. The Ottoman Empire had been in decline since the mid-1800s and was further weakened by its involvement in World War I. As a result, the Allied powers were able to take control of much of the Ottoman Empire’s territory, including parts of modern-day Turkey. The war began in May 1919 when Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, a Turkish military leader, declared a resistance against the Allied forces. He formed the National Forces, which consisted of a network of local militias and volunteers.
