Lalibela is a small town in Ethiopia, located in the Amhara region, about 200 miles north of the capital, Addis Ababa. The town is known for its 11 churches that were carved out of the red volcanic rock of the surrounding landscape. The churches are incredible feats of engineering, and they have become a major tourist destination. The churches are also important to the local people, as they are a major pilgrimage site.
