Thanos is a fictional supervillain appearing in American comic books published by Marvel Comics. The character was created by writer-artist Jim Starlin and made his first appearance in The Invincible Iron Man #55 (February 1973). The character has been adapted from the comics into various forms of media, including feature films, television series and video games. Thanos has been portrayed by actors Damion Poitier and Josh Brolin in the Marvel Cinematic Universe films The Avengers (2012), Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015), Avengers: Infinity War (2018) and Avengers: Endgame (2019). In the films, he is an intergalactic warlord from Titan who seeks to collect the Infinity Stones in order to wipe out half of the universe's population. In the comics, Thanos is one of the most powerful villains in the Marvel universe and is often featured as the main antagonist in stories.
