Yaşar Kemal was a renowned Turkish novelist and journalist. He was born on October 6, 1923, in the village of Hemite, in the southeastern province of Adana, Turkey. He is best known for a series of novels set in rural Turkey, which focus on the lives and struggles of the country's peasantry. He was awarded the 1995 Peace Prize of the German Book Trade and the 2001 Prince of Asturias Award for Literature. Yaşar Kemal wrote more than 50 books and numerous articles in his lifetime. His works have been translated into more than 40 languages and his books have been published in over 100 countries. His works have been praised for their vivid descriptions of the people, customs and landscapes of Turkey. Yaşar Kemal's articles and works often focused on the struggles of the rural poor and the effects of modernization on the traditional way of life in Turkey. He was an advocate for the rights of ethnic minorities and was a vocal critic of the Turkish government and military.
