A white peacock and two female golden pheasants join my flock at Cantitoe Corners. Earlier this year, I adopted three male golden pheasants from Animal Nation Farm Sanctuary in nearby South Salem, New York. The males are marked with bright red, orange, and yellow plumage. I knew they would make wonderful additions to my farm.
It's always fun to share updates on my pets - the dogs, cats, horses, donkeys, pony, chickens, geese, and peafowl. They bring such joy to me and everyone here at the farm. I currently have five dogs. I have two Chow Chows, Empress Qin and Emperor Han. And I have three French Bulldogs, Crème Brûlée,
We're expecting cloudy skies and rain at my farm today, but my geese don't seem to mind one bit. I’ve had Pomeranian guard geese for many years, but I also keep Sebastopol geese, Toulouse geese, African geese, and Chinese geese. They all reside in a large enclosure outside my stable, where they have room to
My three Golden Pheasants are settling in nicely here at my farm. I adopted these exotic gamebirds earlier this year from the Animal Nation Farm Sanctuary in nearby South Salem, New York, a wonderful and caring organization and go-to resource for at-risk animals from New York City and the surrounding areas. Pheasants are native to
One of the easiest and most beautiful ways to observe and appreciate wildlife is by feeding the wild birds. During this time of year, the bird feeders at my farm are filled with chirping hungry creatures. I have a number of bird feeders at my farm, and all the birds love to come by and
And just like that, my peacocks have grown back their lustrous covert tail feathers signaling the start of a very special time of year - breeding season. From February until early August, the peacocks display their stunning and iridescent tail feathers, strut back and forth shaking their hindquarters to produce a rattling sound, and make
It’s always so exciting when we have babies at my farm - this time, cute, fluffy, little chicks. Last month, I attended the 2024 Northeastern Poultry Congress - a poultry show held every year in Springfield, Massachusetts. The event features more than 2500 birds, including large fowl, waterfowl, turkeys, pigeons, Guineas, and of course, a
A trio of colorful pheasants are now members of my farm's flock. Not long ago, I went to visit the Animal Nation Farm Sanctuary in nearby South Salem, New York, a wonderful and caring organization and go-to resource for at-risk animals from New York City and the surrounding areas. While there, I saw three golden
Everyone loves a delicious, healthy home-cooked meal - even our pets. Every few weeks, I set aside time to make my dogs, Crème Brûlée, Bête Noire, Empress Qin, and Emperor Han, a good supply of food. Preparing my own dog food has many benefits - fewer preservatives and additives, more varied and better ingredients and,
Grooming is such an important part of good pet keeping. I have always been a firm believer in regular bathing and brushing for all my furred friends. This is true especially for my Chow Chows, Empress Qin and Emperor Han who have dense double coats. Their coats need to be groomed regularly to prevent them
The latest building project here at my Bedford, New York farm is nearly complete - a new coop now designated for 13 growing turkeys. The poults were incubated and hatched in the feed room of my stable, where they remained until they were big enough to move outdoors. But turkeys grow fast, and I decided
Some of you have asked how my dogs are doing. I'm happy to report - my two French Bulldogs, Crème Brûlée and Bête Noire, and my two Chow Chows, Empress Qin and Emperor Han, are all doing wonderfully. My dogs are groomed and checked for ticks and fleas every day. They are also bathed regularly
We have little babies at my farm -- this time, baby turkeys, or chicks, or poults. It's always exciting when baby fowl hatch successfully. I have been raising chickens, turkeys, geese, peafowl, and other birds for many years. Many of them are incubated and hatched in the feed room of my stable where they can
For geese, this time of year is very special. From mid-winter to early spring, it's mating season. Here at my Bedford, New York farm, I have 16 geese - Sebastopol geese, Toulouse geese, African geese, Chinese geese, and of course my Pomeranian guard geese. Most of them live in a large enclosure outside my stable.
Today at my Bedford, New York farm, we're expecting clouds and rain this morning with possible snow showers this afternoon. With higher than usual temperatures, it's been a dreary, wet, and muddy winter so far. I always enjoy seeing the beautiful snow covering the landscape this time of year, but one group who seems uninhibited
