Heather Setka writes that female colleagues can be one another’s best supports in teaching in male-dominated classrooms. I was so ready for this. I’d printed off 32 course schedules, stapled and stacked for pickup upon the students’ entry into the classroom. I’d created an online quiz prior to class on technical communications skills, hoping to overcome the students’ potential resistance to the material; they were, after all, hands-on power engineering students, so they hadn’t enrolled in college to write.
People are excited about the potential of programs focused on children’s social and emotional learning (SEL). At the least, they can make learning a more engaging and enjoyable experience for children. But, do we know how and if SEL programs work, especially across the diverse economic, ethnic and cultural contexts that constitute low- or middle-income countries (LMICs)? The enthusiasm for SEL programs has galloped ahead of the evidence.
Colleges are considering what supports they can offer undocumented students. Some leaders feel constrained in what they can publicly say or legally promise. The president of Wesleyan University wasted no time addressing his students’ concerns about the election results after Donald Trump’s victory on Nov. 5. Michael Roth put out a statement the next day reflecting on the four years ahead—and highlighting how the university might respond to the potential deportations of undocumented students. He was ready; like other longtime higher ed leaders, he’d been there before.
